Goals|| Why Must We Have Them!
Let’s take a moment to talk about the incredible power of setting goals. It is not just mere aspirations or dreams; they are the stepping stones that lead us to a life of purpose, fulfillment, and success. By setting goals, you are taking a proactive step towards creating the life you truly desire. So, let’s dive in and explore why they are so important and how they can transform your life.
It Gives You Direction:
Setting goals provides you with a clear sense of direction. They act as a compass, guiding you toward your desired destination. When you set them, you are making a conscious decision to take control of your life and steer it in the direction you want to go. They help you to focus your energy, time, and resources on what truly matters to you.
It Provides a Roadmap to Success:
Imagine embarking on a journey without a roadmap. It would be confusing, aimless, and filled with detours. Similarly, in life, setting goals provides you with a roadmap to success. They break down your big dreams into smaller, manageable steps. They help you to stay focused, organized, and on track. With each one you achieve, you move closer to your ultimate vision of success.
Having a direction in life is crucial for personal growth, fulfillment, and success. When we have a clear sense of direction, we are more likely to make purposeful decisions, set meaningful goals, and navigate through life’s challenges with confidence. Finding direction in life is a continuous journey. It may evolve and change as you grow and gain new experiences. Embrace the process, stay true to yourself, and keep moving forward with purpose and determination.
-
Self-Reflection: Finding direction starts with self-reflection. Take the time to understand your values, passions, strengths, and weaknesses. Reflect on your past experiences and identify what has brought you joy, fulfillment, and a sense of purpose.
-
Setting Goals: Once you have a better understanding of yourself, set specific and achievable goals that align with your values and aspirations. These goals can be short-term or long-term, and they should provide a clear direction for your actions and decisions.
-
Creating a Vision: Develop a vision for your life. Envision where you want to be in the future and what you want to accomplish. A vision acts as a guiding light, helping you stay focused and motivated on your journey.
-
Taking Action: Having direction is not enough; you must take action to bring your vision to life. Break down your goals into smaller, manageable steps and create an action plan. Consistently work towards your goals, making adjustments along the way as needed.
-
Embracing Challenges: Challenges are inevitable on the path to finding direction in life. Embrace them as opportunities for growth and learning. Overcoming obstacles will strengthen your resilience and determination, ultimately leading you closer to your desired direction.
-
Seeking Support: Surround yourself with a supportive network of family, friends, mentors, or coaches who can provide guidance, encouragement, and accountability. Their perspectives and experiences can offer valuable insights and help you stay on track.
-
Embracing Flexibility: While having direction is important, it’s also essential to remain flexible and open to new opportunities and possibilities. Life is unpredictable, and circumstances may change. Adaptability allows you to adjust your direction when necessary without losing sight of your overall vision.
-
Celebrating Milestones: Celebrate your achievements and milestones along the way. Recognize and appreciate the progress you have made, as it will fuel your motivation and reinforce your sense of direction.
Goals! What’s the big deal with goals anyway? Why bother writing goals down? Why are you more successful when you have goals? That is what we will uncover in this blog today.
A goal is an objective that a person or a system plans or intends to achieve. This is according to Wikipedia. Well, that sounds easy enough. So how do we accomplish these goals quickly and easily? There are different ways to go about it. And one of the most effective ways is to choose a plan that best works for you. For example, if you are not a morning person, then buying a yearly membership to work out at the gym at 5:00 am before heading off to work, may not be a good fit. On the other hand, if you’re an early bird, and enjoy watching the sunrise, great.)
Step 1
Search out different ways of setting goals and different ways of achieving your goals. The following Ted Talks video collection has 53 quality videos on different ways to get into a goal-centered environment.
Step 2
Make a plan for your goal(s) Let’s use the example of losing weight.
- Set the goal-loose weight
- Make strategies-cut out of sugary snacks, and get exercise
- How to apply-stop eating snacks at the staff meetings, packing a high protein lunch, do not buy any biscuits or snacks for home, walk during my lunchtime, and on weekends.
That is my personal goal plan for losing weight in 2021. What’s your goal plan? Play with it so you can make it your own. That’s a major key to accomplishing your goals. Take a few minutes to write out your goals one by one. You can use the steps indicated above as a basic guide.
Step 3
Take Your Goals To The Next Level
Now that you have a goal list, and you’ve completed step 2 let’s jump into the last and possibly the most important part.
- Set a goal and be specific-loose weight, ➡20 pounds
- Make strategies and make them measurable-cut out sugary snacks, and get exercise➡ to lose 4 pounds per week starting in the second week.
- How to apply and make them time sensitive-stop eating snacks at the staff meetings, pack a high protein lunch, do not buy any biscuits or snacks for home, walk during my lunchtime, and on weekends. ➡so this diet thing looks like an investment of about three months.
Being a creative person, time limits aren’t easy for me to take on some days. Especially when I don’t feel like doing it.😊 So for me, I rather set the time limit small, and finish the race, than run the risk of not getting to the finish line.
Again, write out what works for you. It doesn’t matter that your sister or cousin can lose weight in a week! That’s not you and that’s not me. Set realistic goals that you can do and get to your finish line.
Some Tips On Setting Goals Easily
1)Goals Get You More By Less
Once you achieve the goal you set, it will allow you to gain something you want in a shorter amount of time. Hence improving the quality of your life. For example, when you achieve the goal of buying a car, there are multiple unseen benefits. You can spend more time with your family. Or have access to drive to places that you could not reach by bus or by walking. Maybe you could apply for better employment, which would require a car for commuting. With the extra money you earn with your new job, you can take your family on weekend vacations.
2)Goals Give You A Sense Of Accomplishment
There is a proverb that says we value the things we worked for. There’s a lot of truth in that statement. Knowing that you can shape your life. Knowing that you can make a better life for yourself and those you love is very valuable. We are all given innate tools and resources to buildup a better life. And knowing how to use those tools is important.
3)Goals Provide Life Focus
There is a world-renown speaker and minister who mentioned that he writes out his goal list in blocks of 10 years! Well now then, I was completely blown away by that. Until that moment, I never looked at my life as blocks of 30 to 40 goals, 40 to 50 goals, and so on. Another motivational speaker and life coach suggested keeping a three-ring binder, filled with every dream, wish, desire, note, scribbles, cutouts, and photos. Then before each year begins, pull out and organize the action steps, to accomplish those goals within that year. 4)Naturally Reduces Procrastination
If you’re new to this goal-setting idea, then it’s best to start small. After you have acquired some success, you will naturally start to reduce and even eliminate, in some cases, the procrastination you once had. Because you will have developed a track record of success. This will be very helpful in your life.
5)Set Boundaries
Let’s be real if you have a goal to finish your exam papers, and someone asks you to go out, the answer is a quick, “No way I have to study”. If someone asks you to go on a senseless shopping spree, the answer is, “No way I’m saving up for a car”. Goals let us mentally have the accomplished list in our subconscious mind and keep us on track.
6)Easy Decision Making
We have all witnessed or part took in a scene of wrong decisions due to unclear thinking. How many times have you gone in to buy an appliance, say a washing machine, only to have left the store with the most expensive model? Upon arriving home, and reflecting, realized the salesperson sold you extras you will never use or need. By mapping out your goal of buying the washing machine clearly in 3 steps, your conversation with the salesperson could go differently.
7)Goals Can Reduce Your Stress
Setting goals is like getting into a boat with a mapped-out plan of how to get to the other side. This is a lot more relaxing than, running out of the house, jumping in the boat, um not sure where you’re going, not sure if the weather is good for that, um oh, and you forgot one paddle. Hum, so you try to paddle with only one paddle and realize that you forgot your wallet and didn’t pack any lunch for your boat trip. Then after hours of frustration, due to a lack of mapping out your goals for this boat trip, you ask yourself why you even had the idea in the first place. Goals can help avoid this scenario.
